Quick answer
How do I beat General Velgar?
General Velgar is the boss at the end of Dragon Slayer, fought at Velgar’s Rise in the Fractured Plains at power level 4. He does not appear on request: you have to gather the recipe and materials for a challenge horn and craft it to summon him. He has 6,000 health, no listed weakness or resistance, and is immune to poison and burning, so damage type is not the puzzle — surviving the fight is.
- He is aggressive in the open world and strafes you with poison breath and meteor barrages while you are travelling, long before the boss fight.
- His dragonbreath and meteors are blocked by caverns, interiors and player-built roofing, which is the practical answer to the roaming attacks.
- He is immune to staggering, so a shield and parry will not interrupt him the way it does other enemies.

Where Velgar sits in progression
One boss, two very different encounters with him.
The wiki puts Velgar’s release at 15 April 2025, well before Fellhollow existed, and places his lair at Velgar’s Rise in the Fractured Plains. He is one of Queen Kuldra’s generals and the dragon the goblins came to call the Big High War God after the events that put him in their stories. In the main storyline he is the antagonist of Dragon Slayer, which makes him the first major dragon encounter the game puts in front of a new player.
That framing matters for expectations, because Mobalytics describes Dragon Slayer as the game’s main introduction and says it leads towards General Velgar as the first major dragon encounter. Defeating him is not the end of the main route — it is the point where the route turns. The Fellhollow storyline continues directly from it: the wiki records that following the defeat of General Velgar in Ghornfell, the Wise Old Man found the sealed door near Ashien’s Watch and passed the player its passphrase. The Withering Heights page and the Fellhollow page pick the story up from there.

The name is the joke
The wiki records as trivia that Velgar is an anagram of Elvarg, the dragon fought at the end of the original Dragon Slayer quest. The parallel is deliberate on both sides: Elvarg attacks the ship in the original, and the Dragonwilds opening echoes the same event, except the dragon doing the attacking is Velgar.
Summoning him: the challenge horn
He does not stand in a lair waiting. You build the invitation.
The most useful thing to understand about Velgar is that the boss fight is summoned. The wiki states that to summon and fight him the adventurer must gain the recipe and the ingredients to craft a challenge horn, and it quotes the recovered document describing the design: a dragon’s tooth carved with dragonkin sigils, joined by metal wires in a lattice formation — the journal entry calls it a spiderweb lattice glistening with traces of magical power. So the preparation for this boss starts with a craft, not with a walk to an arena.
The same page records that he respawns per instance, created again using the challenge horn or by rejoining. That is a useful property: the fight is repeatable on your own terms rather than being a one-time gate you either pass or fail. If the horn recipe or its materials turn out to be the bottleneck, the materials guide covers what the crafting tiers demand.

The drop table was changed after release
The wiki’s update history records that in 0.12.0 on 23 June 2026 the drop table was updated with the ascension shard. Anything you read about Velgar’s drops written before that update may be describing a shorter list.
The attacks before the fight
Most of the frustration with Velgar happens when he is not the boss yet.
The wiki is direct about this: Velgar will occasionally attack the adventurer in the wild, spraying poison breath or dropping meteor barrages on the ground. That makes him a hazard of travelling through the Fractured Plains rather than only a fight you opt into, and it is the reason the wiki’s update history for the early patches reads like a record of players asking for relief.
| Update | Change to the open-world attacks |
|---|---|
| 0.7.2 — 24 April 2025 | Meteor barrages cut from 5 to 2 per event; the poison breath event became strafing runs only; frequency and intensity reduced, and multiple events no longer trigger at once |
| 0.7.3 — 2 May 2025 | Meteor attacks blocked by player-built roofing |
| 0.8.2 — 29 July 2025 | Dragonbreath and meteors blocked inside caverns and other interiors |
| 0.10.1 — 15 January 2026 | Velgar no longer attacks the player at random after he has been defeated |

Two of those lines are directly actionable. If meteors are hitting your base, the fix is a roof — the game was patched specifically to make player-built roofing block them. And if you are being harassed while moving, caverns and interiors are safe, which is worth remembering given how much of the early map is cave and ruin. The last line is the one that changes life after the fight: from 0.10.1 onward, beating him stops the random attacks for good.
A community guide for one of the safest build locations makes the same point from the other direction. Describing Temple Woods as a favourite place to build, it notes approvingly that after the updates we do not have to worry about Velgar attacking us every 5 seconds. The wiki also records that the Dragon Terror music track plays when Velgar is overhead anywhere in Ashenfall except the Temple Woods — which lines up with that assessment and is the reason the area is a popular recommendation.
Preparing for the fight itself
No weakness to exploit means the answer is gear tier, food and stamina.
The stat block is unusually flat: no weakness, no resistance, immune to poison and burning. There is no elemental answer to find, so what you bring is a straightforward question of power level and sustain. The Mobalytics beginner’s guide gives the rule of thumb worth applying here — check the power level of your equipment before entering a new region, and treat enemies that barely take damage or kill you in a few hits as a signal to upgrade first. Velgar is power level 4, so that is the number to measure your gear against.
Healing comes from food. Mobalytics states plainly that healing potions have been removed, with stat-boosting potions still available, and that eating is your main source of healing with a short cooldown between consumptions. Its advice for exactly this situation is to always carry several cooked meals and enough water before entering a vault, fighting a boss, or travelling far from a base. Note that this conflicts with other contemporary guide advice about carrying healing potions — the disagreement is recorded on the Withering Heights page rather than settled here.
Stamina decides the fight more than raw damage does. Mobalytics warns that attacking, blocking, sprinting and dodging all draw on the same bar, and that repeatedly attacking until it is empty leaves you unable to avoid the next move. Its recommendation — shorter combinations, watch the animations, keep enough stamina to defend — maps directly onto a boss whose attacks are dodged rather than tanked. Ranged options are worth bringing too: the same guide notes that ranged weapons can pull one enemy without aggroing a group, which is how you handle the goblins and garou around his lair without turning the fight into a brawl.
Match power level
Gear at power level 4 or better before you summon him; upgrade rather than retry.
Stock food and water
Several cooked meals and clean water, since eating is the healing mechanic.
Watch the stamina bar
Leave enough to dodge. Attacking to empty is how the fight goes wrong.
Clear the escort first
Handle goblin and garou company at range so you are not fighting them and Velgar at once.
Craft the horn, then summon
The encounter begins on your terms — prepare everything before you call him.
A shield will not stagger him
The armour guide describes parrying as blocking at the moment an attack lands, producing an audible clang and staggering the enemy — as long as they are not immune, and it names Velgar as the example. So do not build a plan around interrupting him: block for the damage reduction and the set bonus, not for the stagger.
What you take away from the fight depends on the reward table, and the headline drop is Velgar’s Head, which is tied to the Dragon Slayer storyline rather than sold. The shield ladder interaction is the other practical angle, and the armour guide is where the dragon-family shields — including the ones built on an anti-dragon shield — are laid out with their materials. If you are deciding what to carry into the Fractured Plains beforehand, the weapons guide compares what each tier actually hits for.

How this page was verified
Written on 16 September 2026 from the cached Velgar article on the Dragonwilds wiki, revision 67979, retrieved the same day; the wiki’s Armour and Fellhollow articles retrieved the same day; the Mobalytics beginner’s guide published on the 1.0 launch date; and the official Eye on Ashenfall 0.10 post. No playthrough was performed for this page, no challenge horn was crafted and Velgar was not fought or summoned. The stat block, the summon requirement and the update history are reproduced as the wiki records them rather than confirmed by observation. A 199-second community video of a post-nerf Velgar kill was located but adds no verifiable mechanics beyond the fact that the fight is repeatable, so no claim on this page rests on it. Neither source describes Velgar’s attack patterns phase by phase, so this page documents preparation and context rather than a step-by-step combat script.
Still open
- The wiki’s infobox lists Velgar with no weakness and no resistance, but the official 0.10 notes mention fixes to General Velgar’s weaknesses and resistances. Whether his resistances changed in that update, and what they were before and after, is not established by these sources.
- No source cached for this page lists the materials required to craft the challenge horn, only its described design. Where the recipe comes from and what it costs was not verified.
- The community video found for this fight shows a post-nerf kill but does not explain mechanics, and its captions contain no usable tactical detail. No tactics on this page are drawn from it.
- Search results referenced a wiki strategy guide subpage for Velgar, but that page was not among the evidence cached for this batch, so its contents are not represented here.
- The Mobalytics guide states that healing potions were removed, while other contemporary guide material still recommends carrying them into boss fights. The conflict is unresolved and both positions are left standing.
- The wiki lists Velgar as dying post-quest and his location as both Velgar’s Rise and the Fractured Plains across two infoboxes on the same page. They appear to describe the same place, but the duplication was not resolved.
- The wiki article carries no reader comments, so no community correction to the encounter description was available to weigh against the article text.
