Heartstrings — RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Heartstrings is a seven-stop walk across the Fractured Plains with a bow at the end of it, and almost everything that goes wrong with it goes wrong at the start: the first memorial stone sits on a cliff you cannot walk up to. This page covers the climb, the order the stones must be touched, the stretch where the enemies actually get dangerous, and what the Crystal Bow reward is worth.

Quick answer

How do I complete the Heartstrings quest?

Reach the glowing blue memorial stone beside the large blue-leaved Anima tree at the top of the hill in the Fractured Plains — the climb needs Windstep, or the stones can be reached by building up to them. Search it to receive a crystal seed, then find and interact with the remaining six memorial stones in order, working eastward from the first. At the seventh, choose option 1 to sing the bard’s song of remembrance, and the quest completes.

  • The quest needs nothing but Getting Started and no required items, though the wiki recommends good armour and weapons, antipoison potions and air runes for Windstep.
  • The stones must be touched in order, from 1 to 7, and all seven sit beside the same distinctive blue-leaved Anima trees.
  • Leave a free inventory slot before the final stone: the wiki states the quest will not complete unless there is room to receive the Crystal Bow.

The Fractured Plains leg of the quest runs through open ground with wolves, garou and the occasional wandering dragon. The wiki recommends antipoison potions for a reason.

What Heartstrings is and what it asks for

A short quest with an unusually specific starting point.

Heartstrings released with an update on 15 April 2025, which makes it one of the older quests in the game rather than something added with Fellhollow. The wiki describes it as a secondary quest following an unnamed elf who has left memorial stones across the region while grieving a late human partner named Meya. The quest description is the instruction itself: sing the bard’s song of remembrance, written with the wiki’s own spelling slip left in place on the source page.

Mechanically it is a collection run with a puzzle at each end. The start is a climb, the middle is a walk, and the finish is a dialogue option. The reason it is worth reading a guide for at all is the start: the wiki places the first stone at the top of the hill at Fractured Plains, and the map guide covers how that region fits into the continent if you have not been there yet.

The song is in Welsh

The wiki records as trivia that the song written by the elf bard is in Welsh, and links a full translation. The quest is a memorial for a lost partner, so the lyrics carry the story — worth reading the translation after the fact rather than skipping the dialogue.

The starting stone and the climb to it

Two sources describe the same climb, and the IGN version is the one with landmarks.

The first memorial is not on the plain floor. The wiki describes it as a glowing blue memorial stone next to a unique large tree with blue leaves, sitting on top of the hill where the Fractured Plains dungeon is located, and it says the way up is to cast Windstep a few times up the rocks to the right of the cave that leads into that dungeon. Searching that first stone puts a crystal seed in your quest inventory — that is the item the rest of the quest is tracking.

IGN’s walkthrough gives the same climb with more to anchor on: start at the entrance to the Fractured Plains from the Whispering Swamp, turn left, and go up the hill until a wooden structure appears on your right. Windstep onto it, then Windstep twice more to the top of the cliff. At the top there is a small pond, a tin ore deposit on the left, and a second wooden structure with no platforms — jump onto the horizontal wooden beam, then Windstep once more to the cliff above. The Anima tree is up there, and the glowing blue memorial stone is on its right side.

  1. Enter from the Whispering Swamp side

Take the middle entrance into the Fractured Plains and turn left, heading up the hill.

  2. Windstep onto the first wooden structure

This is the first of several jumps; air runes cover the whole sequence.

  3. Climb the cliff, then the beam

Windstep twice to the cliff top, cross the small pond area, then use the horizontal wooden beam to gain the last stretch.

  4. Search the memorial stone

It sits on the right of the large blue-leaved Anima tree. Searching it grants the crystal seed and starts the quest.

Windstep has a level requirement attached

IGN states that the Windstep spell is unlocked at Runecrafting level 8. Elsewhere the game’s own skill lists put Windstep lower than that, and the level conflict is recorded on the skills and spells guide rather than resolved here. If you cannot cast it yet, the wiki’s alternative still works: build foundations and stairs up to the stones instead.

The video guide covers the same approach and adds one practical note: getting up there is a fight, not a stroll. It counts at least three enemies you have to clear to get started, including a wolf that interrupts mid-fight and a dragon that joins in. It also flags the cliff top itself as unusually safe — no enemies spawning up there, plus a good number of mining spots — and recommends carrying an extra lodestone or teleport to take advantage of it.

The seven memorial stones, in order

One direction, one tree type, and an order that actually matters.

There are seven memorial stones in total and they must be interacted with in order, from 1 as the first to 7 as the last. The wiki’s framing is that every stone lies beside one of the same distinctive blue-leaved Anima trees, and that all of them are eastward from the first — which is the whole navigation problem simplified: find the next blue tree, and the stone is at its foot. The wiki also notes the trees carry Anima-infused bark, so the walk doubles as a resource run.

7North, across a gorgeAnima tree on the edge of a cliff, past a fallen tree used as a bridge

Directions and landmarks as given by IGN’s walkthrough. The wiki describes the same stones as a straight eastward chain of blue trees and does not list the individual landmarks.

The video guide’s advice on the route is mostly about not dying in the middle of it. It recommends placing lodestones across the Fractured Plains as you go, because travelling back to a stone you already passed is the slow part, and it points out that the bark scattered around each tree is worth the inventory space for later recipes. Where the wiki and IGN both describe wolves and garou in the open ground, the video’s version of the same stretch is blunter: stones two, three and four are quiet, and stone five is where it turns — you arrive between enemy groups with a two-enemy camp sitting right next to the tree.

Stone five is the one to prepare for

The video guide’s recommendation for the camp is to kite the enemies and kill them at range rather than trade hits, and to have a full armour set on for its bonus before pulling them, because otherwise they can kill you quickly. It also suggests putting a lodestone in the corner near stone five, since the area is awkward to walk back to.

Finishing the song and the Crystal Bow reward

One dialogue option ends the quest, and one inventory slot decides whether you get paid.

At the seventh tree the quest resolves through a single choice. The wiki’s instruction is that reaching the final tree and singing the song completes the quest; the video guide records the specific prompt as option 1, sing the bard’s song of remembrance. The video also notes two wrinkles it hit: the option had to be initiated twice before the quest actually completed, and it had heard from other players that enemies attack after the song — something that did not happen on its own run. Neither is documented on the wiki, so both are recorded here as one player’s experience rather than as expected behaviour.

Do not finish the quest with a full inventory

The wiki states plainly that the quest will not complete unless the player has inventory space to receive the Crystal Bow, and the video guide repeats the warning. Empty a slot before you interact with the seventh memorial, because the failure mode is a completed song with no reward.

The reward is the Crystal Bow itself plus the recipe for the Crystal Bow, so you are handed a finished weapon and the means to make more. IGN is specific about the crafting side: the bow needs a Smithing Anvil, not a crafting table, and the anvil’s recipe unlocks the first time you craft a Bronze Bar at a Furnace. The bow then appears under the Masterwork section of the smithing menu, alongside the Abyssal Whip and the Staff of Light.

Whether the bow earns a slot depends on what you are already carrying, and the weapons guide covers how the ranged ladder compares across the tiers. The video guide’s own read on the bow is that it hits hard — it singles out the arrow damage multiplier as the reason — while admitting it had not yet worked out how good the special action is in practice.

Heartstrings is optional, so the quest is not a gate on anything. It is, however, a cheap way to pick up a masterwork-tier weapon and a stock of Anima-infused bark on the same trip, and the walkthrough page is where it sits relative to the main route through the region.

How this page was verified

Written on 16 September 2026 from the cached Heartstrings article on the Dragonwilds wiki, revision 63072, retrieved the same day; IGN’s Heartstrings walkthrough, retrieved the same day; and a 421-second guide published by xDivineStrikex on 20 April 2025, five days after the quest released, with auto-generated captions. No playthrough was performed for this page and none of the seven memorial stones was visited in-game, so the climb, the stone order and the landmarks are reproduced as the sources describe them rather than confirmed by observation. No official source describing this quest was found in the evidence collected, so nothing on this page rests on an official statement. The quest predates the 1.0 launch on 15 September 2026 by roughly seventeen months, and whether any part of the route or the reward changed in that time is not established here.

Still open

  • IGN states that Windstep unlocks at Runecrafting level 8, while the skill-spell lists behind the skills and spells guide give lower requirements for the same spell. The conflict is unresolved and both readings are left standing rather than merged.
  • IGN’s directions for memorials six and seven both begin by heading north from the sixth stone, so the two steps appear to describe the same movement twice. The landmarks differ — a hill off the path against a gorge crossed by a fallen tree — but the sequence was not verified in-game.
  • The wiki gives the memorial stones only as an eastward chain of blue trees, without compass directions or landmarks for individual stones, so its description and IGN’s table could not be cross-checked stone by stone.
  • The video guide reports needing to choose option 1 twice before the quest completed, and hearing from other players that enemies attack after the song. Neither behaviour appears in the wiki or IGN text, and neither was reproduced here.
  • The Crystal Bow’s special action is named Scattershot by IGN and described as shatter shot by the video guide. Which is the in-game name, and whether the two refer to the same action, is not established by these sources.
  • The video guide’s assessment of the bow is limited to its arrow damage multiplier, and it states it had not yet judged the special action. No source cached for this page compares the bow against other weapons at the same tier, so this page makes no ranking claim.
  • The Heartstrings article carries no reader comments, so no community correction to the sequence above was available to weigh against the wiki text.
