RuneScape: Dragonwilds Blast Furnace

The Blast Furnace is the station that turns high-tier ore into bars, and it arrived with the Fellhollow update. It has three gates in front of it: coal in your inventory to learn the recipe, a build cost that includes draconic leather, and fuel pellets rather than the wood or charcoal a normal furnace runs on. This page covers all three, then lists what it smelts.

Quick answer

How do I get a Blast Furnace and what does it do?

You unlock the recipe the first time you obtain coal, then build it from 12 Granite, 8 Iron Bar, 4 Draconic Leather, 10 Fire Rune and 2 Vault Core at Construction 12. It smelts high-tier ores into ingots, but it only runs on fuel pellets made from charcoal, adhesive and coarse animal fur — wood and charcoal straight into the furnace will not work.

  • It was added on 15 December 2025 with update 0.10, and the wiki files it under Material Processing.
  • It must have no roof above it to function, and casting Superheat on it speeds the process up considerably.
  • Steel is the recipe you will use most: 3 Iron Ore plus 3 Coal, or 1 Iron Bar plus 3 Coal, for one Steel Bar.

What the Blast Furnace does that a furnace cannot

Same job as the base furnace, higher tier of ore, and a different fuel.

The wiki describes the Blast Furnace in one line: it uses intense heat to smelt high-tier metal ores into ingots. It is a build-menu facility rather than a station you find in the world, it was released on 15 December 2025 alongside Fellhollow, and the buildings article groups it with the Material Processing structures — the kiln, furnace, grindstone, spinning wheel, loom and tannery.

The ordinary Furnace does the same job one tier down and has been in the game since 15 April 2025. Putting the two side by side is the clearest way to see what the newer station adds, because the wiki documents both in the same format.

Both stations share the roof rule and the Superheat interaction; the fuel and the tier of output are what separate them.

The roof rule is worth reading twice, because it is the one requirement that catches people out after they have paid the build cost: a roof above the station stops it working, so it goes outside your walls rather than in the workshop you built for the other benches. Superheat is the other half of the same sentence — it is a skill spell rather than a consumable, and the skills and spells guide covers where it sits in the spell list.

The coal unlock and the build cost

One of the five build ingredients only comes from Fellhollow, so the station is gated behind the region.

The unlock condition is not a skill level or a quest. The wiki states that the Blast Furnace can only be built once the player has unlocked the recipe by obtaining coal for the first time — the same pattern the ordinary furnace uses with tin ore. Because coal is abundant in Fellhollow and present in earlier regions, in practice the recipe usually appears the first time you mine a coal deposit anywhere.

Only one line in that list is region-locked. Draconic Leather comes from dragon wolves in Fellhollow — the hide goes through a tannery — which means the newest station in the game needs materials from the newest region. The Fellhollow page covers where the wolves are, and the video walkthrough that goes with this build notes that four leathers is roughly one to two wolves, so the trip is short once you are there.

Everything else is obtainable earlier. Granite, Iron Bars and Fire Runes come from the base-game routes, and Vault Cores are the resource the base locations guide already treats as the gate on lodestones, which is why two of them is the cost that slows the build down most. The remaining question is where your coal comes from, and the honest answer is that early on it is the same trip: the map guide covers how Fellhollow sits relative to the regions you will have unlocked by then.

Iron is the one ore you can farm outside the new region

The steel-tier walkthrough is explicit about this: iron ore is not new, it exists in Stormtouched Highlands, and if the Fellhollow cliff routes are too dangerous at your level you can farm iron there instead and only make the trip north for coal and the dragon wolves. Coal is the part that has no earlier equivalent.

Fuel pellets: the gate most players hit

You cannot feed it coal, which is the one thing you probably arrived holding.

The Blast Furnace does not accept wood, charcoal or coal. It runs on fuel pellets, and those are crafted rather than gathered. The wiki gives the recipe as a combination of charcoal, adhesive and coarse animal fur; none of the three comes from Fellhollow, so this is preparation you do at your base rather than another regional grind.

The fuel section at the bottom of the furnace interface

There is one detail where the sources disagree, and it is worth knowing before you go looking. The wiki says fuel pellets are assembled at a blacksmith’s bench. The December 2025 steel-tier walkthrough says the standard crafting table, scrolling to the bottom of the menu and looking under miscellaneous next to the whetstones. Both are plausible readings of a menu that changed after launch; if you cannot find the recipe at one station, try the other. The pellets themselves look the same either way.

The fuel slot and the input slots are separate

The video’s demonstration loads pellets into the fuel section at the bottom, then adds iron bars and coal together to produce steel. That is the sequence to copy: pellets first, then the ore or bar, then the coal. How much fuel a given craft consumes is not stated by either source used here, so measure it yourself before committing a long crafting session.

The same walkthrough flags a naming trap that costs people a trip: coal and charcoal are not the same item. Coal is the black ore you mine from cliff nodes, and it is the input. Charcoal is the kiln product, and it is a fuel-pellet ingredient. If your blast furnace will not start, the odds are you carried charcoal home thinking it was the ore.

Every Blast Furnace recipe, with inputs and experience

Thirteen recipes, three of them for steel, and two that are not metal bars at all.

The wiki lists the station’s full output table with experience per craft, and it is short enough to reproduce in full. Two things stand out when you read down it: steel is the only bar with three separate recipes, including one that takes an iron bar you have already smelted, and the table ends with molten glass and refined obsidian, which are not metal at all.

1 Bronze Bar10 Bronze Leaf10

Taken from the community wiki’s Blast Furnace output table, which is compiled from the game’s changelogs. Every recipe here is a Blast Furnace recipe; the ordinary furnace carries a separate list.

The pattern in the inputs is worth understanding rather than memorising. Coal is the constant — every metal bar in the table takes three of it, whichever ore you pair with it, which is why the Fellhollow page treats the region’s coal nodes as the real bottleneck. The variants that take a salvage pile or scraps instead of raw ore are recycling routes: nine pieces of salvage for one bar, at exactly the same experience as the ore version for steel and mithril. And the leaf recipes at the bottom — Bronze, Silver and Gold Leaf — convert ten leaves into a bar with no coal at all, which makes them the cheapest way to keep the station busy without spending the coal you mined for steel.

Steel from an iron bar is the flexible recipe

3 Iron Ore plus 3 Coal gives 15 experience and 1 Iron Bar plus 3 Coal gives 10. The second route exists for when you already have smelted iron sitting in a chest, or when you want to split the work across two stations. Neither is presented by the sources as more efficient than the other, so pick based on what is already in your storage rather than on a rate.

Where the bars go afterwards is the other half of the picture. Steel feeds the tier 5 armour and weapon families the armour guide and weapons guide set out, mithril and adamant sit further up the same ladders, and the refined obsidian and molten glass outputs are the ones that surprise people who built the station expecting only metal. The materials guide covers how ground limestone, ground sandstone and ground obsidian are produced in the first place.

How this page was verified

Written on 16 September 2026 from the cached Blast Furnace and Furnace articles on the Dragonwilds wiki, revisions 61465 and 62740, retrieved the same day; the wiki’s buildings article for the Material Processing grouping; a steel-tier walkthrough published by Campfire Survivors on 17 December 2025 with auto-generated captions; and IGN’s skills list for the Rocksplosion spell. The build cost, the fuel pellet recipe and the full output table are taken from the wiki rather than tested, and no Blast Furnace was constructed for this page. The wiki’s output table is itself compiled from the game’s changelogs, which the article states, so the recipes reflect the last recorded changelog rather than a live reading. The one place the sources disagree is the station used to craft fuel pellets, and both versions are shown rather than one being chosen.

Still open

  • The wiki says fuel pellets are combined at a blacksmith’s bench; the video walkthrough says the standard crafting table, under miscellaneous next to the whetstones. Whether one of them is out of date, or whether both stations offer the recipe, is not established by the sources used here.
  • Neither source states how much fuel a single craft consumes, so no fuel-per-bar figure is given. A reader asking what the furnace runs on gets the correct answer — pellets — but the burn rate is unaccounted for.
  • The wiki lists the Blast Furnace as released on 15 December 2025, the same date as the Fellhollow update, but no official patch note collected here mentions the station by name. The release date rests on the wiki’s own infobox.
  • Fuel and build-cost numbers come from a page whose output table is described as based on the game’s changelogs, and the research notes for this page flag that they should be re-checked after the 1.0 rebalance. No post-1.0 reading of the table was available.
  • The unlock is tied to obtaining coal, but the sources do not state whether a specific quantity is needed or whether the first single unit is enough. The page therefore says obtaining coal rather than naming a number.
  • The Blast Furnace article carries no reader comments, so no community correction to the output table was available to weigh against it.
