Quick answer
How do linked chests work in RuneScape: Dragonwilds?
There is nothing to link. Since the 19 August 2025 patch, you can craft an item that needs materials you are not carrying, as long as you are within 12 metres of a chest that contains them. That radius is the feature people mean when they say linked chests.
- No build-menu item is called a linked chest. The storage catalogue lists a Crate, Ash Chest, Oak Chest, Iron Chest and Bank Chest, plus specialised stores for lumber, ore and stone, fish and bait.
- Chests can be locked to their owner by ticking the Private box in the chest interface, added on 11 September 2025.
- Construction 40 unlocks the Personal Chest Spell — 20 Law Runes and 15 Astral Runes per cast on a 5-second cooldown — which opens your own storage from anywhere in the world.

What the term linked chest actually describes
The feature exists. The building does not.
Search for a linked chest guide and you will find people describing a crafting range as if it were a structure. The underlying mechanic is real, and the wiki dates it precisely. On 19 August 2025 the game was patched so that players can craft items without the required items in their inventory as long as they are within a 12-metre radius of a chest containing the necessary items. That single sentence is the whole of the linked-storage system as the sources used here describe it.
- Effective range
- 12 metres from the chest
- What it covers
- Crafting recipes that draw on a chest’s contents
- What it does not cover
- Chest-to-chest transfer, or a shared pool across a base
- Introduced
- 19 August 2025, patch 0.8.3
The distinction matters when you are laying out a base. Because the rule is a radius around a chest rather than a network between chests, the useful question is not which chest to link but where the bench sits relative to the box. A crafting table in the middle of a ring of chests covers more recipes than a chest wall in a separate storeroom, and it is the reason a compact workshop outperforms a tidy warehouse in this game.
The 12-metre figure is a patch note, not a measurement
The radius comes from the wording of the 0.8.3 patch note as the wiki reproduces it. No source collected here states whether the game measures it in a straight line or through walls, or whether a chest inside a closed room counts while you stand outside it, and nothing on this page was tested in game. Treat 12 metres as the figure the patch note gives rather than as a surveyed distance.
One more consequence is easy to miss: the same wiki page records that chests can be locked by their owner by opening the chest and ticking the Private box, added on 11 September 2025. If a chest in a shared base holds materials that nobody else can pull, a private chest is the usual cause.
The chest line, from Ash to Bank
Four general chests and a crate, and the only one with a documented build cost is the smallest.
The wiki’s buildings article files storage under its own heading in the Furniture section and lists the containers in one run: Crate, Ash Chest, Oak Chest, Iron Chest, Bank Chest, Lumber Storage, Armour Mannequin, Weapon Rack, Wooden Barrel, Fishing Barrel, Tackle Box, Cape Rack, Cape Hook and Ore & Stone Storage. The order of that list is the closest thing to a progression the sources offer — it runs from the cheapest container to the largest and then into the specialised pieces.
| Chest | What the sources say | Cost or unlock, where known |
|---|---|---|
| Crate | Listed first in the storage catalogue | No cost recorded on the pages used here |
| Ash Chest | A small storage container for 32 item slots; can be named by its owner | Build menu, Construction 26, 16 Ash Logs and 2 Coarse Thread. Unlocks once you have received ash logs in your inventory and have the Creature Comforts skill perk |
| Oak Chest | Listed between the ash and iron chests in the storage catalogue | No cost recorded on the pages used here |
| Iron Chest | Listed after the oak chest | No cost recorded on the pages used here |
| Bank Chest | Listed last of the general containers | No cost recorded on the pages used here |
Only the Ash Chest has a documented recipe in the articles used for this page. The other four are named in the buildings catalogue with no cost, slot count or unlock condition attached, so the page prints them in catalogue order and says so rather than guessing at a ladder.
The Ash Chest is also the one with a visible history, and it is worth knowing because the name changed under players’ feet. The article records three updates: the chest was renamed from Small Chest to Ash Chest and its storage size was increased on 31 March 2026; chest locking arrived on 11 September 2025; and the 12-metre crafting radius arrived on 19 August 2025. Anyone reading an older guide and looking for a Small Chest is looking at the same piece of furniture this page calls an Ash Chest.
The Ash Chest is a crafting-table problem before it is a storage problem
Its recipe wants a construction level, two stacks of materials and a skill perk, and one of those materials is coarse thread — which is itself a processed item made from flax on a spinning wheel. The materials page covers that chain. In practice the gate is not the wood.
The storehouses that only take one thing
Where this game differs from a generic survival box: several of its containers refuse everything else.
The specialised storage buildings are the part of the system people are least prepared for, because they invert the usual instinct. In most survival games a big chest accepts anything. Here, at least two of the warehouses accept one category of item and nothing else, and a third accepts a short list.
| Building | What goes in it | Where the evidence sits |
|---|---|---|
| Lumber Storage | Lumber only — the counterpart to the fish barrel | A walkthrough describes the fish barrel as the only place fish can be stored and compares it directly to lumber storage, which stores lumber in the same restricted way |
| Fishing Barrel | Fish, and a short list of tackle: the same walkthrough says rods and nets go in, and that those are the only things that can | The fishing article lists Fish Barrel Storage as a passive at level 34 that unlocks the fishing barrel structure, describing it as a very high capacity storage for fish |
| Tackle Box | Bait | The fishing article lists Tackle box as a passive at level 39 that unlocks a storage box for your baits |
| Ore & Stone Storage | Ore and stone | Named in the buildings storage catalogue |
| Armour Mannequin and Weapon Rack | Gear, for display as much as for storage | Named in the buildings storage catalogue alongside the Cape Rack and Cape Hook |
| Wooden Barrel | No restriction recorded | Named in the buildings storage catalogue, and picked up as an item in its own right before it is placed |
The two fishing items come with skill passives attached — one at Fishing 34 and one at 39 — while Lumber Storage comes from Woodcutting 40 per a press skill list. That is a different unlock route from the chest line, which runs through Construction.
Woodcutting is the other half of that pattern. A skill list published by IGN records level 40 in Woodcutting as the point where the Lumber Storage crafting recipe unlocks, sitting between the stamina-cost reductions that make up the rest of that track. So bulk storage in this game arrives through the gathering skills that produce the bulk, not through the construction skill that builds the box — construction is what assembles it once the recipe exists.
That split is worth planning around. If you are levelling Woodcutting for the storage rather than for the logs, the farming guide and fishing guide cover the two other loops that pair a skill with its own dedicated storehouse, and the skills and spells guide covers where these passives sit in each track.
Reaching your storage from anywhere
The strongest storage unlock in the game is a spell, not a chest.
Construction’s headline unlock is not a container. At level 40 the skill grants the Personal Chest Spell, and the press skill list gives its cost as 20 Law Runes and 15 Astral Runes on a 5-second cooldown. A walkthrough covering the skill tracks calls it the biggest single target in the construction skill, and describes what it does in one line: it lets you access your own personal storage remotely, anywhere in the world.
The same walkthrough pairs it with a rune supply rather than treating it as a standalone unlock, and that is the practical framing — a spell that costs 35 runes per cast is only a convenience if you are producing law and astral runes in volume. It also reframes the whole storage question: with the spell in hand, the base layout stops being about how quickly you can walk to a chest and starts being about what the chests hold.
Two costs, one spell
The rune cost and cooldown come from IGN’s skill list, and the description of the spell comes from a video walkthrough that discusses the construction track. They agree that the spell exists, that Construction 40 unlocks it and that it opens your storage remotely; only the press list quantifies what a cast costs. The page therefore gives the numbers once, attributed, rather than repeating them as a settled figure.
What the sources still cannot settle
Storage is one of the thinnest-documented systems in the game, and the gaps are specific.
Three of the four general chests have no published cost, capacity, or unlock condition in any source used for this page. That is not an oversight in the articles — the wiki’s buildings page lists them as catalogue entries, and the individual chest article only ever existed for the one now called Ash Chest. Anyone quoting slot counts for the Oak, Iron or Bank Chests is working from somewhere this page could not reach.
| Open point | What is known | What is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Oak, Iron and Bank Chest capacity and cost | All three are named in the storage catalogue with a clear ordering above the Ash Chest | Slot counts, build costs, skill requirements and unlock conditions |
| Whether the 12-metre radius crosses walls | The patch note states the distance | Any statement about line of sight or occlusion, from any source |
| How the specialised stores interact with the crafting radius | Lumber storage and the fishing barrel take restricted item types | Whether a restricted store also feeds crafting recipes, or only holds its category |
| The Storage Ledger | A comment in a Reddit review thread, posted days before 1.0, said one was coming “on Tuesday” and would sort inventory into existing chest stacks | Any official patch note confirming it, or any post-1.0 account of it existing |
The Storage Ledger entry is deliberately framed as a claim rather than a feature. It is listed here so that a reader who has heard the name knows the page is aware of it, and so nobody reads its absence from the main text as a denial that it exists.
Where to go next: the materials page covers the items that fill the chests, the base locations guide covers where to put the building they sit in, and the farming guide and fishing guide cover the two loops whose produce has its own dedicated storage. The walkthrough page covers the main quest that takes you through the zones where the world chests sit.

How this page was verified
Written on 16 September 2026 from the cached Dragonwilds wiki articles Ash Chest, Buildings, Fishing and Weapons, retrieved the same day; IGN’s skills list; three video walkthroughs with auto-generated captions; and a Reddit review thread. The distinction the page is built around — that linked chest is a player term for a crafting radius rather than a placeable item — comes from the Ash Chest article’s reproduction of the 0.8.3 patch note and from the absence of any such item in the buildings catalogue. No chest was built, no radius was measured, and the slot counts and costs for the Oak, Iron and Bank Chests are left out because no source used here states them. The Storage Ledger is reported as a claim made in a thread rather than as a feature, because nothing collected confirms whether it shipped.
Still open
- The Oak Chest, Iron Chest and Bank Chest have no documented capacity, cost or unlock condition in any source used here, so the page prints the storage catalogue in its published order and stops short of describing a progression it cannot evidence.
- Whether the 12-metre crafting radius passes through walls or requires line of sight is not stated by any source. The page quotes the patch note distance and flags that it is untested.
- The Storage Ledger was described in a Reddit comment as arriving on the Tuesday, which in this thread’s timeline is the day 1.0 launched. No official patch note collected here mentions it and no post-1.0 account of it was available, so the page neither confirms nor denies it.
- The comment cache for that Reddit thread flattens the page structure, so the Storage Ledger comment cannot be reliably attributed to a named account from the cached text alone. It is treated as a community claim regardless of author.
- The 25 hidden chests figure covers Temple Woods and Bramblemead Village only, and comes from a video published on 2 September 2025. No chest census for the later regions was available, and the page does not present the number as a game-wide total.
- The Buzzspell video’s requirement of 18 ash logs is for the building pieces used to climb to chests, while the Ash Chest recipe costs 16 ash logs. Both numbers are correct for what they measure, and the page states the difference rather than treating it as a conflict.
- Whether the specialised stores such as Lumber Storage and the Fishing Barrel feed the 12-metre crafting radius is not addressed by any source. It is a practical question for anyone building a workshop around a bulk storehouse and it is left open.
