The loop itself is short. You weed the plot, equip a seed and use it to sow, fertilise once, water once a day, cure anything that turns diseased, and harvest when it is ready. What makes it a skill rather than a chore is that each of those steps moves a number, and the wiki publishes all of them. Four plots, one per region, each with its own preferred seeds
Most seeds have to be sown into a plot. Tree seeds are the exception and can be grown on the ground.

The plots follow the same regional ladder as the rest of the game: Brynmoor first, then Ghornfell, then Fellhollow and Umbral Sands. A crop from a later region needs the later plot.
Six crops can be harvested repeatedly without replanting: redberry, dwellberry and cadavaberry bushes, and ash, oak and willow trees. The wiki adds a caveat that matters for planning — although berry bushes can be harvested repeatedly, they provide significantly reduced experience on subsequent harvests, so a bush is a convenience and a one-off experience payment rather than a permanent tap. Growth cycles, weeds and disease chance

While a plot sits empty its weeds build up: plots start with an initial layer, and another is added every day that nothing is planted, up to three layers. Each layer can be cleared for experience and Weeds, so a neglected plot is not a loss — it is a small amount of stored experience.
Disease is the part that punishes absence. Every plant has a base disease chance, and the wiki lists them all. A potato has a base 30% chance of becoming diseased each growth cycle, and the desert and cactus crops are the worst offenders at 0.75.

Disease looks different from a distance
A diseased plant changes graphically with a brownish-yellow haze and reads “Diseased” when you hover the plot. It has to be cured to stop it dying — which makes a quick visual pass over your plots part of the daily routine, not an optional detail.
Watering and fertilising: the two multipliers that matter
Both steps lower disease and raise yield, and both are one-per-cycle actions with published numbers attached.
Plots can be watered once per day, which significantly lowers the chance of disease and slightly increases yield. Watering cans can be filled from natural water sources, and the type of water you use changes the result. Unwatered crops carry a further 0.8x chance of disease, dirty water cuts that to 0.3x while adding a 1.15x yield increase, and clean water cuts it further to 0.2x for the same 1.15x yield.

Rain waters plots with clean water automatically, which saves a job — but it does not grant experience and does not cure disease. Watering a plant that was just seeded, or that is harvestable, diseased or dead, gives only a small base 2 experience; the real watering experience comes from watering a plant that is actively growing in its plot. Because clean water and dirty water give the same yield, the difference between them is purely the disease multiplier, and clean water is the better of the two.
Fertilising is the other half. A plot only needs to be fertilised once during its cycle, until it is fully harvested and cleared, and the wiki recommends crafting and carrying several compost buckets at once because no higher power level bucket exists yet. Compost offers 0.5x disease chance and a 1.5x yield increase; super compost offers 0.25x disease chance and a 1.75x yield increase.

Only the final fifth of a compost bucket applies the effect and grants experience, which is why the wiki suggests carrying spares rather than topping up one bucket at a time.
Curing, and whether plant cure deserves its own page
There are three ways to cure a plant, and one of them is a cape.
A diseased plant must be cured to stop it dying. The straightforward route is a plant cure, an item made at a cooking range. The second route is the Humidify spell once the Cleansing Rain passive is unlocked at level 50. The third is the Farming cape, whose special effect acts as an infinite source of plant cures — which makes the cape the long-term answer to the whole disease system.
Curing happens in place, and the wiki notes one quiet advantage: a cleansed plant returns to its current growth stage. That means a plant diseased in its final stage and cured the same day still finishes on schedule, so curing is a save rather than a setback. Constructs are the infrastructure layer, and they split into three jobs. Water constructs collect or store what your watering cans need: a rain catcher costs 6 Ash Logs and 4 Stone and passively collects clean water during rainy weather up to 300, while a well costs 32 Stone, 6 Ash Logs and 1 Vault Core and passively collects clean water every day up to 700. Water barrels store 500 from 8 Ash Logs, and the large water barrel stores 1000 from 10 Oak Logs.

How yield and experience are actually calculated
The wiki publishes both formulas, which is unusual for a survival game and very useful for planning.
Yield stacks in three steps: base yield, multiplied by the secateurs multiplier, then compost, then water, with each step rounded up to a whole item. Base yield is 5 for most seeds and 3 for flax, corpse cotton, desert weed, bunny cactus, barrel cactus and fibrous pipe cactus. Iron secateurs multiply by 1.25, compost by 1.5 or super compost by 1.75, and clean or dirty water by 1.15.

Harvest experience works off the yield you actually got, so the multipliers above are experience multipliers too. It starts from a base harvest experience of 8, multiplies by a region factor of 1 in Brynmoor, 2 in Ghornfell and 3 in Fellhollow and Umbral Sands, and then applies global experience modifiers from boosts. The wiki works the maximum case through in full: with iron secateurs, super compost and clean water, a full harvest reaches 15 of most crops.
Two mechanics are worth knowing because they change that maths. Repeat harvests from a berry bush apply a heavy reduction on later pickings, so the multiplier stack is a first-harvest figure. And the Uproot spell, plus its upgraded Harvester version, harvests crops in a radius rather than one plot at a time — but it does not work with iron secateurs, so it trades the 1.25x yield multiplier for speed and reach.
Experience boosts, and what deserves its own page next
Farming experience can be boosted from three separate categories, and only one of each can apply at a time.
A trinket, a food and a potion can each contribute a Farming boost, and only one of each category counts. The trinket is the Inspiring Ring of Farming at 5%. Foods include the Sweet Veg Ball, which grants Knowledgable Nourishment for a 10% experience increase to all skills, alongside the Wild Pie and the sandwich family. Potions run from the Weak Focused Farming Potion at 15% through the Focused Farming Potion at 30% to the Super Focused Farming Potion, with durations of 300 or 600 seconds.

The wiki notes that experience boosts multiply rather than add, so the combined total does not match a simple sum of the percentages above.
Three parts of this skill are the strongest candidates for their own pages later. The disease-and-cure system is one, if more cure sources are added. The crop calendar is another, because the region-per-plot table and the disease chances together make a planting reference that would be easier to use as a standalone table than as a section inside a guide.
